Next Phase of Stabilization Starts with the Installation of Steel I-BeamsDuring the first week of May 2007, the next step in the stabilization process for the mill was commenced. In this phase, steel beams will be installed internally to provide rigidity to the overall structure. The design chosen is a "diamond" shaped pattern, the corner of which will intersect the center of each of the walls. The structure will be installed on the 3rd level of the building and repeated on the 7th level.
Caption: Structural Bracing Pattern of I-beams In order to fasten the beams to the walls, anchors similar to the ones that were used to stabilize the walls last summer have been installed in a similar fashion by Davis Structural. (See previous stabilization updates on this website.) Plates measuring 18 inches square will then be bolted to these anchors. The internal support structure will then be attached to these plates. Since the completion of the first phase of the wall stabilization last year, the positions where the anchors penetrated the outside of the wall have been mortared over to appear as unobtrusive as possible.
